Dieting For Weight Loss

The most common reason that people cite for dieting today is weight loss. While most of us would love to claim the noble mantle of dieting for health the vast majority of us are doing so for vanity. This, however, is a perfectly acceptable and plausible reason for making the lifestyle changes that are necessary in order to diet. In fact, this reason might prove to be a far greater motivator than many of the other commonly stated reasons for dieting.

When dieting for weight loss one of the most common complaints is constantly feeling hungry. In order to help combat this, you might want to incorporate some of the following strategies into your dieting program. First of all, eat more high fiber foods. Whole grains, apples, pears, and lima beans are a great source of fiber as are many breakfast cereals. Easy does it however when it comes to fiber as it may be filling but there are some unpleasant side effects that may accompany heavy fiber eating (remember that beans are a good source of fiber). Try using a product such as Bean-o when consuming larger amounts of fiber. You might also try spreading your fiber intake throughout the day rather than consuming all your daily fiber at once.

Another method for feeling fuller when dieting is to drink plenty of water while dieting. Water provides an important service to the body and is very necessary when it comes to delivering all the nutrients where they need to go. Water also helps regulate your metabolism, which is very important to the dieting and weight loss process. Additionally, water will help you skin retain its elasticity so that your skin can go more easily back into place once the serious weight loss begins.

Learn to control your portions. We live in a world where portions are over inflated and super sized so often that we no longer know what an appropriate portion looks like. Restaurant meals are quite often more than adequate for at least two full meals and that is before salads, soups, appetizers, or desserts have been ordered. Learning to portion correctly can save you from over loading your calorie intake for the day massively. It can also help you get extra helpings of the lower calorie foods such as lettuce and other vegetables rather than taking such large portions of calorie rich starches or fried foods.

Do not go “Gung Ho”. There are limits to what the body and the mind can handle. When you go on a diet you are making a drastic change to your bodies caloric intake. If you go overboard you can lead to health risks along the way. Begin cutting calories a little at a time and incorporate changes as you go rather than going in with an all or nothing attitude. If you go overboard with your dieting plans chances are that you are dooming your diet to failure.

Take your diet one step at a time for the best results and be sure to incorporate extra physical activity into the mix. Even gardening when done on a regular basis can burn calories, so can cleaning the house, and playing with the little ones. Take a walk to the park or the corner store rather than getting in the car and pull a wagon or push a stroller while you’re at it. The added weight will be just enough resistance to burn a few extra calories.

Dieting for weight loss does not necessarily have to be a major sacrifice on your part but in order to be successful it will be a radical change in lifestyle, particularly if you need to lose more than a few vanity pounds. The health implications of loosing the weight are well worth the required effort and should not be taken lightly no matter how excited you are about your new body that is hiding inside your old one.

What I’m about to say may scare you a little. However, it shouldn’t. It is completely normal and is supposed to happen. At some point, you MAY stop losing weight. But… your weight loss has stopped. It’s been a few weeks and you haven’t lost even 1 pound.  So now to lose weight, you now need much more less than 3000 calories. How do you know how many calories is right for you?

There’s one method for getting a good idea of your calorie level needed to stay the same weight. It requires putting your gender, weight, height, age and activity level through a complicated math formula. However, I have assumed that no one actually wants to sit around doing complicated maths. Right? So what else can you do.

While the above method is probably accurate enough for most people, I can’t say for sure if it will be as accurate for everyone. And, since this is the number that will be at the heart of your weight loss diet plan, I’m going to mention a better, more simple method. It’s not so much a “method” as it is a “test.”

Basically, you would start eating a certain number of calories each day and then closely monitor what your weight does when consuming this many calories. For example, if you maintained weight eating this certain number calories per day, you have found your maintenance level. If you gained weight, lower your calorie intake a little and see what happens then. If you lose weight, then you know you’re already below your calorie "stay the same" level.

Do you need to know how many calories is in each type of food? Answer, NO. For example, does a bar of chocolate have more calories than a banana? It is easy to find out. Every day for a week, eat a banana. Then next week every day eat a bar of chocolate. Then by comparing what happens to your weight during those weeks, you will know the difference in calories between the two. Provided of course that everything else in your life during the test period stays exactly the same.

Obviously that is not a scientific approach, but most people I deal with who want to lose weight, don't care about the science, they just want to lose weight. So most, if not all, of my advice about how to lose weight using a diet free weight loss method is based on common sense. And because common sense is free, so is my advice.

You would probably just smile if I asked you how many times you’ve started dieting and how many times you’ve stopped. Let’s look at some ways that could help you stick with your diet.

To stick with a diet you must always keep an eye on yourself. Dieting is no different than any other goals. You will not accomplish those goals if you do not keep track of the things you do and your progress against your goals.

The best way to do this is to keep a journal where you log the things that you eat and keep track of the calories that you take in. In your journal you could also make notes of your emotional state on each day of your diet. This will help you determine if certain foods have an impact on your emotional state. For example, looking back through your journal you could discover a link between those days where you felt down in the dumps and the things that you ate that day.

A diet is only effective if you are consistent with the diet. Your aim should be to follow your diet every single day until it has become part of your natural daily habits.

A very effective way to make a diet stick is to have something visual that reminds you of your ultimate weight loss goals.

This could be as simple as putting that bikini, which currently is two sizes too small for you, in a place where you can see it every day. Next to it, you could put a calendar with your vacation time clearly marked on it.

You could also put a little note inside a plastic bag and put this inside the ice cream tub in the freezer. This note would read, “Do you really need this?”

It is also a good idea to put little victory stickers on your refrigerator. Congratulate yourself with every small victory that you accomplish.

Now, nobody is perfect. You are bound to make mistakes in your dieting and weight loss effort. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

The most important thing when you make a mistake is to understand why you made the mistake and what you need to do to prevent yourself from making the same mistake in the future.

People say patience is a virtue, but with dieting and weight loss patience is more than a virtue, it is an absolutely essential part of the diet.

In today’s society, there are three main meals that almost all families enjoy. They include breakfast, lunch and dinner. For most people living in the US, these meals are generally set in stone.

Usually, breakfast is fairly small and light, then lunch, which is mid sized and then there’s dinner, the largest of the three meals. What most people don’t realize is that this way of eating is not the best for anyone trying to lose excess body weight.

When we wake up to begin the day, we are in negative calorie territory. There has been many hours of fasting which is why our first meal is called breakfast (break fast).

It is also the meal that has the longest amount of active hours to be used as fuel rather than for fat storage on the body but it is also, unfortunately, the smallest meal for most people with busy lifestyles. Dinner is usually the largest because we have more time to sit down and actually enjoy the meal.

On the downside, our dinners are the meals that end up requiring the most physical activity to burn off, but is placed towards the end of each day when our bodies are least active. So in order to lose more weight, we need to flip this meal programming and eat more sensibly.

To flip your meals, you will need to begin to prepare and eat the largest meal at the start of the day for breakfast. This meal should contain the most calories. As an example, let’s say your on a diet that consists of consuming 1500 calories each day.

Your morning meal can account for around 600 of the total calories. The remaining 900 calories can be used for the remaining two meals and snacking.

For lunch, your meal would be medium sized and could contain around 400 calories. It is the last meal of the day where the big difference occurs.

At dinner time, you should consume a meal of only around 300 calories. This would usually be the same amount of calories in a standard fast breakfast. So as you can see, the day has been completely flipped.

We now eat the amount of calories for breakfast that we used to eat for dinner and vice-versa. The remaining 200 calories can be used for snacking 3 times throughout the day.

This method of losing weight is very effective because your calorie requirement is split up into 6 different meals. The largest meal you eat also has the longest time to get used up as energy and the smallest ends up requiring the least activity to burn.

There have been no overall changes in the food intake, simply a reversal of breakfast and dinner.

The real change in your life that will lead to prolonged weight loss and management will require a change in your thoughts rather than a change to the foods you eat.

By eating as many as 6 meals daily and eating the largest amount of calories at the first meal, your body will work much more efficiently to burn off all those calories eaten.

For example, if you are 45 years old and weigh 170 pounds and your long-term plan is to weigh 120, this may not be a realistic weight loss goal. Especially if you haven’t weighed 120 since you were 16.

One way to find your reasonable weight is to go by your body mass index or BMI. This can be a good indicator of whether you need to shed pounds or not. According to the National Institutes of Health, the ideal BMI range is between 19 and 24.9. You are considered overweight if your BMI is between 25 and 29.9. Any numbers over 30 are in the obesity range.

Using the BMI to measure how much weight you need to lose will help you set goals that apply to you and your body type.

Step 2 – Make objectives that will keep you motivated. Find your reason to lose weight.

For some, using a weight loss plan just to look better is psychologically less effective than losing weight to improve your health. For example, avoiding stroke or heart attack can be a great motivator.

For example, if you have never exercised at all, your best weight loss plan for this week should be to schedule three exercise days. Try finding three different one-mile routes that you can walk next week. If you have an exercise bike or treadmill, plan the time you will work out, for how long, and what music you will listen to while you are doing it.

And, again, be reasonable. If you don’t exercise because the next hour of heavy breathing and movement is too much to bear, then set a goal of 10 minutes. Pretty soon 10 minutes will easily flow into 20 and so on. Work up to at least 30 minutes three times a week. This is an excellent start.

Step 6 – Use self-encouragement to motivate yourself. We have been told for many years to lose weight we must have an all-or-nothing attitude. Unfortunately, this only sets you up to fail. Learn to evaluate your efforts fairly and objectively. If you don’t reach some of your goals, don’t worry, instead look ahead to the next week. You did not “blow it.” Just get back on track and move forward from there. And remember it’s what you do most of the time, not some of the time.

In the end, most people make weight loss plans that remain only that, just a plan. They have to put it into action by incorporating goals that will motivate them to succeed.
